친애하는 한국종교연합 회원 및 친구 여러분:

결실의 계절인 가을에 하시는 일들에 수확의 보람 크시기 바라며, 오랜만에 문안과 함께 두루 평안을 축원 드립니다.
아울러, 민족의 명절 추석을 맞이하며, 천지신명과 조상님들의 음덕을 기리며, 더불어 살아가는 이웃들의 인연에 새삼 감사하는 마음을 나누고 싶습니다.
특히 뭇 생명의 행복과 세계평화를 위한 종교연합의 귀한 운동에, 여러분들과 뜻을 함께 할 수 있음을 다행으로 생각하며, 항상 소원성취를 기도해 마지않습니다.

아시는 바와 같이, 9월21일은 유엔이 정한 “세계평화의 날 (International Day of Peace)"입니다. 매년 이날을 맞아, 지구촌의 인류공동체가 세계평화를 되새겨보며, 나름대로 평화의 문화를 만들어 나가자고 다짐하는 날입니다.
종교적 유엔을 지향하는 우리 유알아이(URI)는 이날을 솔선수범하여 기려오고 있습니다.
금년의 이날은 월요일이므로, 한국의 평화의 날 기념 실행위원회는 편의상 공동행사로서, 그 전날인 일요일(9/20)에 서울 여의도 한강공원과 멀티플라자 이벤트 광장에서 오후1시부터 6시까지, 기념식과 공연 및 전시회 등의 문화행사를 가집니다.
평화를 사랑하는 모든 이들이 모여 서로 배우고 나누며 자축하는 기회가 되리라 믿습니다. 형편이 되시면 동참하시여 유쾌한 시간 가지시기 바랍니다.

유알아이는 현재 한국을 포함하여 80여개국 700여 협력지부(CC)에 걸쳐 지구 곳곳에서 평화운동의 주역이 되고 있습니다. 유알아이 코리아 (한국종교연합)에서도 나름대로 그 운동에 동참하고 있습니다. 이날을 맞으며 각자 나름대로 평화에 대하여 의미있는 시간을 가지시기 바라며, 세계인과 뜻을 함께하고자 하시는 분들은, 21일(월요일) 정오에 가정이나 직장 등을 막론하고 계신 곳에서, 잠시나마 세계평화를 위한 묵념의 시간을 가지시어, 지구촌의 평화연대를 이루어 주시기 바랍니다.

예년과 같이, 반기문 유엔사무총장도 평화의 날에 즈음하여 메시지를 발표하였기로, 참고하시라고 첨부해 드립니다. 금년의 주제로서 “모두의 존엄과 평화를 위한 동업 (Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All)” 을 강조하고 있습니다. 특히 젊은이들에 주목하여 평화의 역군으로 성장시킬 것을 요청하고 있습니다. 평화로운 미래를 위한 준비에 우리 모두 협조하도록 노력하여야 하겠습니다.

더욱 건강 청안하시고, 풍성한 추석을 누리시기를 삼가 빕니다.
이 땅에 평화가 가득하기를 (May Peace Prevail on Earth) !

This year’s International Day of Peace comes at a time of deadly violence and destabilizing conflicts around the world. Rather than succumbing to despair, we have a collective responsibility to demand an end to the brutality and impunity that prevail.
I call on all warring parties to lay down their weapons and observe a global ceasefire. To them I say: stop the killings and the destruction, and create space for lasting peace.
Although it may seem hopelessly distant, the dream of peace pulses in the lives of people everywhere.

There is no group more poised to help realize this dream than today’s young people. They are part of the largest generation of youth in history, more aware and connected than any before. I urge all governments to make greater investments in realizing the potentially massive contributions of the world’s young peace builders.

At the same time, we need to mobilize all partners who share the goal of peace. Non-governmental organizations, faith-based groups and corporations all have a role to play in fostering social progress, protecting the environment and creating a more just, stable and peaceful world. The value of this collaboration is our theme for the Day: “Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All.”

We live at a moment of peril – but this is also an era of great promise. In a matter of days, leaders from across the globe will gather at the United Nations to adopt the 2030 agenda, our 15-year plan to achieve sustainable development. This is fundamental to ushering in a life of dignity for all, where poverty is history and peace is paramount.
On the International Day, as we mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, let us seize the opportunity achieve the Organization’s founding purpose: to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.
